The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) is a Brigade sized element,
made up of a land component (3 Regiments), a Maritime Squadron
and an Air Wing.
It is responsible for:

defending the territorial integrity of the Maltese
Islands on land, at sea and in the air;

provide for security with sensitive locations;
-
provide search and rescue services within Malta's Search
and Rescue Region;

enforce law at sea;
-
provide Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Improvised
Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) cover;
-
provide assistance to other Government entities and in
case of civil emergencies (such as floods, pollution,
explosions and air disasters); and
-
provide for State Ceremonial duties.
The AFM is also committed to contribute towards
international peace and stability by participating in EU-led
Crisis Management Operations.

Carmel Vassallo
Commander, AFM
Brigadier Vassallo was commissioned into the Regular Force of the Armed
Forces of Malta (AFM) in 1976 and qualified as a
helicopter pilot
in 1983. He held various senior posts and was promoted Colonel
in August 1996. He was appointed Deputy Commander of the AFM in December 1996.
He was promoted to Brigadier and appointed Commander
of the AFM in March 2004.
