The Central Information Management Unit (CIMU) was established in
February 1999 to provide leadership in the application of information and
communication technologies (ICT) in the Public Service and to promulgate
polices and standards concerning the technologies applied. CIMU developed the Malta Government portal ('www.gov.mt')
and the Public Service Intranet.
Following a review of ICT policy,
a decision was taken to close down CIMU on 30 September 2005. Responsibility for broad ICT strategy
and planning across the whole public sector now belongs to the Ministry for
Investment, Industry and Information Technology whereas Malta Information Technology and Training Services Ltd has assumed responsibility for technical standards and policies and
corporate ICT applications. The government portal and the Intranet are being
managed by the Department of Information.
